BERALDI, Henri (1849-1931). Estampes et livres 1872-1892. Paris: L. Danel at Lille for L. Conquet, 1892.

4o (263 x 187 mm). Printed on wove paper, specially ordered for this book and watermarked with the author's name and the title. With frontispiece and 28 other heliogravures of bindings, by Dujardin, printed by Chardon-Wittmann, and 13 reproductions of bookbindings printed in color on gold. (Some foxing.)

CONTEMPORARY SIGNED BINDING BY CHARLES MEUNIER: gold-tooled blue crushed morocco, broad border of multiple intersecting fillets, large tools at the angles, flat spine similarly decorated and gilt-lettered, roll-tooled ornament on turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges uncut, original wrappers preserved. Slipcase. Provenance: Charles Meunier (autograph card signed by Béraldi to Meunier, dated 17 April 1892, and its stamped envelope, inserted on stubs) -- Claude Guérin (Paris sale, 1990).

NO. 352 OF AN EDITION LIMITED TO 390 COPIES. Béraldi's catalogue of acquisitions made during the first twenty years of his book collecting career. At the time he mainly devoted himself to 18th-century prints and illustrated books in fine bindings. The superb color-plates by Danel are printed by the same method as his celebrated reproductions for the Dutuit catalogue of 1899 (see lot 119). Charles Meunier (1866-1940) apparently bound the book for himself, demonstrating his faultless technique in finishing. His production over thirty-five years -- he retired in 1920 -- was enormous, his mosaic work and cut-leather being best known. He published seven albums of 100 plates each, documenting much of his work between 1893 and 1905. His binding on this Béraldi is undated and may be somewhat later. BBB Harvard 71.
