Engraved title and 64 engraved plates by Thomas Langley after Batty Langley. 2-page text leaf titled 'On the Ancient Buildings in this Kingdom' with a woodcut initial. (Occasional light spotting or marking, minor skillfully-repaired worming affecting text and plates). Contemporary polished calf, gilt morocco lettering-piece (boards a little marked and scuffed, short splits on joints). Provenance: early marginal note on pl. IX.
FIRST EDITION UNDER THIS TITLE, COMPLETE WITH THE RARE TEXT LEAF. First published as Ancient Architecture, Restored and Improved (London: 1742) and re-issued under this title with the text of the preliminary 'Dissertation' abbreviated and amended, re-titled 'On the Ancient Buildings in this Kingdom', and dated 31 January 1747. Harris notes that 'most copies of the 1747 edition were issued without text', describes the leaf as 'rare' (locating only one copy retaining it), whilst Archer states that the 1747 edition 'contains no introductory matter' and RIBA that 'None of the letterpress included in the first edition [...] was reprinted by Millan'.
