Miller after Lightoler (light soiling and spotting, front free endpaper worn). 19th-century calf (rebacked, worn at extremities). Provenance: John Steven 1775 (owner's inscription on front free endpaper and title).
Lightoler was one of the author's of The Modern Builder's Assistant (London, 1757) and four of his designs for stables and farm buildings included in that work are reprinted here. The drawings, which range from tan-pits and cow sheds to ornamented farm buildings such as a Chinese farm-house, are probably the earliest published designs for fermes ornées.
