FORE-EDGE PAINTING -- THOMSON, James. The Seasons, London: J. Murray, 1778. 8°. Engraved frontispiece by Caldwell and 4 plates by Bartolozzi after Cipriani, extra-illustrated with 2 engraved plates by White (the latter plates slightly shaved, some light browning, spotting and offsetting). Contemporary vellum by or in the style of Edwards of Halifax, flat spine with title-label and gilt ornaments, green calf inlay with gilt Greek key pattern at head and foot of spine and round sides, two oval paintings on covers, on the upper cover a young couple converse under a tree with a castle in the background, on the lower cover another couple caught in a storm, gilt edges, green morocco gilt slipcase (light discolouration to the binding, slipcase rubbed). FORE-EDGE PAINTING depicting a castle in its spacious grounds with a river meandering through the middle. Provenance: D. C. (painted book-label); Lucy Coles (book-label).
