Goodwin wrote in 1915: 'Painted most of the day from old studies of Freybourg which brought back once more to me that endlessly picturesque city. Ruskin once showed me a little water-colour he had made from his hotel window, looking down straight on to the malachite-green water, over the suspension bridge on to a wonderful group of old red-roofed houses, where the river runs through a dark archway.' - The Diary of Albert Goodwin, London (privately published, 1934).
