AN UNUSUAL POLYCHROME LACQUER SQUARE BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
With indented corners, the top well carved through the dark red, light red, dark green and ochre layers to the ochre ground with a long- tailed, crested bird in flight amidst flowering peony branches, above panels of various flowers carved on the sides of the cover and the box which is fitted with a single tray, with a band of key fret carved around the foot, the interior in dark brown lacquer

For other similarly carved polychrome lacquer wares of 16th century date see, Karamono, Selections from the Tokugawa Art Museum, No. 2, Nagoya, Japan, 1997, pp. 28-9, nos. 33-7 and pp. 48-53, nos. 75-91. All of these are carved with similar flowers and leaves and nos. 33-6 also incorporate long-tailed birds. Some of the pieces are boxes and covers, but boxes of a different type.
