AN UNUSUAL PLUM BROCADE CUT-VELVET CARPET
LATE 19TH CENTURY
Composed of three vertically-joined panels, woven in shades of pale coral, green, silver, brown and gold metallic threads, the main field with a quatrefoil panel of precious objects surrounded by a repetition of 'antiques' including flower-laden vases, archaistic vessels, tied scrolls, and scholar's rocks and brushpots, enclosed by inner bands of key-fret pattern and lotus, within a single outer band of stylized striding dragons, all reserved on a deep aubergine-purple velvet ground
