Lot Essay

It is extremely rare to find a Cizhou ribbed jar of this type covered with a russet glaze rather than a black glaze. A black-glazed jar of similar shape with vertical ribs arranged in groups of four is in the Tokyo National Museum, illustrated in The Hirota Collection, Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo, 1973, no. 87.
