Lot Essay
The particular palette combination on this bowl, yellow, iron red and soft blue, appears to be very rare. The shape of the bowl and the decoration are also rare, and there appears to be no other bowl like it published, although a few dishes with this palette have been published. Two are illustrated by J. Ayers, The Baur Collection, Geneva, 1969, vol. 2, pl. A 193, a Longqing-marked dish of eight-petalled flower form decorated with dragons and the Eight Treasures on the interior and lingzhi fungus sprigs on the exterior; and pl. A 194, a Wanli-marked circular dish decorated with dragons. Two other dishes similar to the first Baur dish, also with Longqing marks, are illustrated in Chinese Porcelain: The S.C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1987, no. 73, and one in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge is illustrated by S. Valenstein in the catalogue for the exhibition, Ming Porcelains, China Institute in America, 29 October 1970 - 31 January 1971, p. 82, no. 54.
