Lot Essay

Compare the more crudely modelled group of a couple seated at a table where the woman is playing a pipa and the man is wearing a similar scrolled cap, illustrated by R. Kerr and J. Ayers, Blanc de Chine; Porcelain from Dehua, Chicago, 2002, no. 32. The authors identify the man's headdress as a type worn by Opera singers during the 18th century, and propose that the scene may be from a popular drama.

Two strikingly similar groups were sold in these rooms, 29 March 1983, lot 221 and in our London rooms, 9 May 1988, lot 113.
