KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)
Richly painted with a densely populated military scene taken from Feng Shen Bang (Investiture of the Gods), depicting the story of the Zhou toppling the Shang Dynasty, and painted with various deities including the Dragon King (Longwang), Jiang Ziya, Huang Feihu, Nuozha and King Wu of Zhou, all surrounded by a formidable army of armed men seated on horseback, some holding pennants bearing the character 'Zhou', all beneath a band of 'antiques' on the shoulder, the neck decorated with a continuous scene of young immortals including Liu Hai and his three-legged toad

Lot Essay

Compare a similar vase illustrated by R. L. d'Argencé Chinese Ceramics in the Avery Brundage Collection, San Francisco, 1967, p. 146, pl. 68. Of similar proportions, and also dated to the Kangxi period, the main panel depicts an audience at the camp of a Manchu commander-in-chief, while the neck is decorated with Shou Lao and other immortals.
