Lot Essay

An excellent blade basically of suguha with ko-gunome, fine sujigai-ba, ashi, and yo, and with a refined and rather pointed boshi, and violent patches of utsuri typical of the work of Motoshige of Osafune village during the Nanbokucho period.

The old sayagaki has been obliterated in places, but it carries an attribution to Motoshige which is repeated on the government registration document. There are references to dates, names, and what appear to be inventory numbers. The names include Hoki Ehara Motoshige, Ponto Tamaki Mataemon, and "Shirasaya Goro," with dates in accordance with 1759 and 1777.
