The first generation Kanetomo, or Yuemon no Jo, is believed to have gone from Soshu to Naoe in Mino Province in the fourteenth century together with Kaneuji. There followed several successive generations of smiths in the fifteenth century signing both Kaneuji and Kanetomo. This tanto appears to be by one of the earliest of the line.
