The configuration morohazukuri with a dragon and Buddhist ken carved on the omote and gomabashi and bonji on the ura; the forging pattern itame with jinie ochoji midare of nie with wide habuchi and full-length ko-midare muneyaki; the tang ubu with two holes

The koshirae comprising a black-lacquer saya decorated with family crests in gold hiramaki-e and mounted with fine silver fittings including a fuchi-kashira, koiguchi, kozuka, kogai, kurigata, kaeritsuno and uragawara all chiseled with dragons in clouds in katakiri-bori; fitted with shakudo nanako gilt-floral crest menuki, 19th century; 55.5cm. long

Lot Essay

The competent smith is the second generation Okamoto Kuniyoshi, who was retained by the Kato clan of Mutsu Province. He studied in the schools of Ozaki Sukataka following the first generation, using at one time the name Sukekuni, and also studied under Hoki no Kami Masayoshi. This was around 1804-5, a few years before his father's death. He died in 1845. The inscription states that the blade was commissioned by one Nagase Tsuguhiro.
