Tangei was the son of Tanzan (1655-1729), a pupil of Kano Tan'yu. Tanzan was the founder of the Tsuruzawa school. In the Genroku era (1688-1703) Emperor Higashiyama made him a "painter-in-residence" (goyo eshi) in Kyoto. Tangei received the honorary title Hogen and is well known as the teacher of Ishida Yutei (1721-1786), who in turn was the teacher of Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795).
