The light blue-ground moulded with Neuzierat in slight relief enhanced in gilt, the cartouches finely painted with city and landscape views, comprising: an oval two-handled tray inscribed Königl: Schloß in Berlin and Palais des Königs in Berlin, 42.5 cm. wide; a baluster coffee pot and cover inscribed Palais des Kronprinzen and Burg Hohenzollern, 20 cm. high; a baluster milk jug and cover inscribed Garnison Kirche in Potsdam and Die neue Kirche in Berlin; an oval sugar bowl and cover inscribed Opernhaus in Berlin and Schauspielhaus in Berlin; a cup inscribed Palais d. Prinzen Albrecht and Palais d. Prinzen Carl, the saucer inscribed Schloss Bellevue and Schloss Monbijou (some restoration) (9)
Provenance
By repute King Faruk of Egypt (1920-1965) gave this solitaire to one of his navy's officers, who helped him escape in 1952 with a yacht to find asylum in Italy after he was overthrown by Nasser's military putsch. The officer was married to the aunt of the present owner, who inherited the solitaire.
