7 volumes, 8o (265 x 170 mm). Half-titles in vols. 1-3 only (a few minor pen or pencil marks in text, tear to p. 27 of vol. 7 affecting text). 497 (of 500) plates after Audubon, by W.E. Hitchcock, R. Trembly and others, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen, with wood-engraved anatomical diagrams in the text (missing plates 63, 108, and 384, some occasional pale spotting, 1½ inch tear to margin of plate 276). Gray buckram, edges gilt (very slight darkening to spines). Provenance: Nebraska State Library (stamp across title-page of each volume and handwritten on a page of text in each volume).
Second octavo edition, the first to be published after Audubon's death, by his son Victor, and the first to incorporate tinted backgrounds to the plates. Nissen IVB 52; Sabin 2364. (7)
