"I feel what distinction and sympathy were implied by the [rime] of the Urban Club that I should be a guest at their banquet and I hope you need no assurance of my disposition to accept an invitation... acceptance is however impossible in this case. I am so inveterate a refuser of all and every summons to a Public Dinner of whatever the kind--always with the exception of the Royal Academy's Dinner which I have attended for the last quarter century..."
