MAXIMILIAN ZU WIED-NEUWIED, Prince (1782-1867). Voyage dans l'interieur de l'Amerique du Nord. Coblenz, Paris, London: J. Hoelscher, A. Bertrand, Ackermann and Co., 1839-41.
5 volumes, comprising: 3 volumes text, 8o (230 x 150 mm) and 2 volumes of plates: atlas 2o (596 x 439 mm) and small oblong 2o (289 x 417 mm). Together 81 aquatint plates (48 folio plates all colored by a CONTEMPORARY HAND and heightened with gum arabic, and 33 small plates, including 3 hand colored) after Karl Bodmer, most large plates with the Bodmer blind-stamp, by J. Hurliman, L. Weber, C. Vogel, Salathé, Himely, Prévost, R. Rollet, P. Legrand, Desmadryl, and others, one engraved folding map, one table and wood-engraved illustrations in text (lacks title, 9 small plates with some staining, 6 plates with heavier staining, few large plates with some darkening, plate 20 with 1 in. tear, just touching blank plate margin). Contemporary green half morocco and quarter morocco, spines gilt (light rubbing to edges); modern green cloth clamshell box. Text bound in contemporary red cloth, spines gilt lettered, edges gilt (some joints cracked, two covers loose); cloth folding case.
FIRST FRENCH EDITION, WITH FIRST ISSUE OF PLATES, OF THE FINEST WORK ON NATIVE AMERICANS AND THE AMERICAN FRONTIER. Bodmer was employed by Prince Maximilian to record his travels amongst the American tribes of the Plains during 1833-1834, reaching as far west as Fort Mackenzie and the Blackfoot tribe of Montana. Bodmer's plates depict the scenery, villages, dances and, most outstandingly, portraits of individuals from various tribes: his portrait of Pehriska-Rupha, the "Moennitarri warrior in the costume of the Dog danse" is one of the greatest icons of a vanished way of life. See Abbey Travel 615; Field Indian Bibliography 1036; Howes M-443a; see Sabin 47017; Wagner-Camp 76:3. A VERY FINE SET. (5)
