Folding map, 7 plates, and 2 leaves of currency facsimiles (some minor tears to plates, plate facing p. 136 with paper tape reinforcement on verso, some offsetting, folding plates shaved at the top with little or no affect to image). (P. 13 and p. 443 torn with loss to margins, but not affecting text, pp. 331-332 with small hole affecting a few letters.) Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt (corners bumped, spine of vol. 2 cracked, joints tender). Provenance: Crichel (stamp on verso of front free endpaper); Denis St. Martin (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. Anburey was an officer under General Burgoyne during the Revolutionary War and was captured at Saratoga. He was later shipped to Virginia, and his account, written in the form of seventy-nine letters, give details of his experiences and the manners and customs of the people he meets. His account is much criticized and is sometimes thought to be plagarized from Burnaby, Smyth, and others. Howes A-226; Lande 7; Sabin 1367. (2)
