Apparently unrecorded French edition of the United States constitution. Howes notes that the French translation was made by the duc de Rochefoucault, at Franklin's suggestion, with over 50 explanatory
footnotes. This apparently unrecorded edition also includes the Bill of Rights, listing the twelve amendments proposed to the First Congress, ten of which were passed. The address of Congress to the inhabitants of Quebec, dated 1774, occupies pages 103-118. The preamble ("Discours préliminaire") of 55 pages pretends to address the people of Haiti, for the purpose of their drafting their own constitution. The date of the work, in the middle of the French Revolution, together with the preamble, suggests that the edition was not printed in Haiti but was created for the purpose of helping the French in drafting their own constitution. SCARCE: OCLC locates only two copies.
