[CIVIL WAR]. LEE, Robert E. Autograph letter signed ("R E Lee") to General George Washington Custis Lee, Headquarters, 21 February 1864. 1 page, 4to, docketed on verso "...Expects to be in Richmond on the evening of the 23rd.," the ink extremely pale (readable with difficulty).
"I HAVE YOUR LETTER OF THE 19TH INST & SHOULD NOTHING PREVENT WILL REPAIR TO RICHMOND...IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE DIRECTIONS OF THE PRESIDENT..."
Over the winter's respite from combat, Lee had remained at Headquarters near Orange, Virginia, largely occupied with efforts to feed, clothe and arm his dwindling but still formidable Army of Northern Virginia. Rumor had already hinted that Grant was to be brought to the East to lead the Union army's expected Spring offensive. General Lee's son, to whom the present is addressed, was still attached to Davis's staff, having failed to get the President's permission to join the army in the field. It was Davis's habit to summon Lee from his Headquarters to Richmond periodically for conferences on military strategy.
