MALCOLM X SIGNS OFF ON A PAGE FOR A PLAYBOY ARTICLE. A carbon manuscript page from Alex Haley's draft of an article on Malcolm for Playboy magazine. Haley later expanded his notes, along with other material mined during long, coffee-fueled interviews with Malcolm X, into the famous Autobiography of Malcolm X. Perhaps Malcolm had wanted to sign off on particularly sensitive passages like this one (page 8 of Haley's manuscript), concerning whether the Rev. Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam were anti-white: "What we're anti- is anti-evil, anti-oppression, anti-lynching. And you can't be anti- those things unless you're also anti- the oppressor and the lyncher....You can't separate crime from the criminal. In fact, Mr. Muhammad teaches, if the present generation of whites would study their race in light of their true history, they would be anti-white themselves..."
