FIRST EDITION, second impression. A VERY FINE PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed from Byrd to Charles Evans Hughes, Secretary of State from 1921-25 and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1930-1941: "To Charles E Hughes one whose life has been a great inspiration to me R E Byrd ny. city April 14, 1928."

[Laid-in:] BYRD. Autograph letter signed ("Richard E. Byrd") to Charles Evans Hughes, Boston, April 19, 1928, in which Byrd expresses his admiration for Hughes: "I admit I was moved at your expressions of confidence. ... It struck deep with me because I hold you the biggest man of our times."
