2 parts in one volume, 8o (159 x 96 mm). Gothic type. Engraved title vignette by Adam Friedrich Oeser on first title, woodcut vignette on second title. Woodcut initials and head- and tail-piece ornaments, type ornament headline rules. (Light foxing.) Early 20th-century tan sheep (spine perished). Provenance: "Md la Générale de Sandoz" (early 19th-century inscription on first title-page); L. Eus[tache?] H. Gaullieur-l'Hardy (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, issue without the errata and with woodcut vignette at end. Outer formes of sheets A and G in the second state, with the misprints "durgelesen" on p.16 and "harine" on p.101 corrected. Goethe's first work of fiction, Werther achieved almost frightening overnight success, inspiring a series of imitative suicides and sounding the opening salvo of the Romantic movement.
