FIRST TRADE EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: "Dear Joe Wharton: In remembrance of all your patient kindness, which at last resulted in the two splendid deer-heads that now adorn my walls. Sincerely yours, Jack London, Glen Ellen, Calif. Feb. 28, 1913." A letter to Fred Lockley mentions: "The two enclosed letters signed by me, will give you the names of the men who hold the heads [those he'd been trying to get out of Oregon], and the number of heads each man is holding. Joe Wharton holds two heads for me, at Grant's Pass, and P.D. Johns holds six heads for me at Glendale... I am confident both these men may be trusted to properly pack the deer heads" (The Letters of Jack London, ed. Earle Labor, et al, Stanford, 1988, p.1124).
