A FINE PRELIMINARY DRAWING FOR 'OUTSIDE OVER THERE', the third and last work in Sendak's self-styled picture-book trilogy. It appeared "eleven years after the second, In the Night Kitchen, and eighteen years after the first, Where the Wild Things Are. He views the three works as a unit because 'They are all variations on the same theme: how children master various feelings--anger, boredom, fear, frustration, jealousy--and manage to come to grips with the realities of their lives'... The artist feels that his illustrations for Outside Over There owe a decided debt to the two Sendak works immediately preceding it: Some Swell Pup and Fly by Night. Certainly the clear, bright palette of the first influenced the brilliant colors of the painterly illustrations in Outside Over There" (Selma G. Lanes, The Art of Maurice Sendak, New York, 1980, pp.227-229). Outside Over There was published in 1981.
