2o (308 x 200 mm). Collation: A6 B-S8 T-V10 x-z8 Aa Hh8 ii6 KK-VV8 xx6 yy-zz8 a-f8 aa-cc8 dd10. Large woodcut illustration on title and approximately 210 other woodcuts, some full-page and one double-page, by the Late Master of the Grüninger Worsksop, ALL WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND COLORING, approximately 210 finely hand-colored initials. (Blank margins of title restored, first gathering frayed and reinserted and A6 misbound, clean tears in leaves R4, 2E8, 2M6 d7 and f7 without loss of text, occasional staining throughout.) Contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, pastedowns from a 13th-century Italian legal manuscript (restored and rebacked, clasps lacking); brown quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: Petrus Mell? (faint 16th-century inscription on title); presented to the Augustinian monastery in Cologne by Petrus Metternich in 1641; Count Arenberg (Nordkirchen bookplate); L.H.P. Klotz (sale, Christie's London, 2 November 1994, lot 259).
A fine copy with contemporary coloring of one of the great German woodcut books of the Renaissance, the masterpiece of the artist known as the Late Master of the Grüninger Workshop. Sebastian Brant was commissioned by the publisher to edit the work and based his commentary on that of Cristoforo Landino, adding several poems not in earlier editions of Virgil.
