MUYBRIDGE, Eadweard (1830-1904). Animal Locomotion. An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements. Philadelphia: The University of Pennsylvania, 1887.

2o. Group of 98 (of 100 only), collotype plates by Muybridge printed by the Photo-Gravure Company, with printed title page. (Ink stamps in image margins, some plates with short tears or small chips a few with tape repairs.) Modern buckram portfolio.

FIRST EDITION. RARE; A SUBSCRIPTION COPY OF MUYBRIDGE'S CHEF-D'OEUVRE, a work that -- like Stubbs' The Anatomy of the Horse -- is as important in the field of science as in that of art. Although the complete set of images for Animal Locomotion totalled 781 plates in 11 volumes, only 37 complete sets were produced (see E. Muybridge Complete Human and Animal Locomotion ed. A.V. Mozley (New York: 1979, 3 vols), I, p. vii); the work was issued by subscription, and many of the subscription sets of 100 plates were subsequently broken up. Roosens and Salu 7236. -- [With]: Animal Locomotion: Prospectus and Catalogue of Plates. Philadelphia, 1887. 12o. Modern buckram. (2)
