A HELLENISTIC GOLD HERAKLES KNOT EARRING
CIRCA 4TH CENTURY B.C.
The tapering twisted wire ear hoop ornamented with a Herakles knot with central filigree eight-petalled rosette, flanked on double wires by a granulated lozenge below and two granulated triangles and four rosettes above, 1 1/16 in. (2.7 cm.) long; three Mesopotamian gold hair rings of 'boat-shaped' form, 3rd millennium B.C., ½ in. (1.5 cm.) long av.; a pair of Parthian hollow gold hoop earrings, each hoop composed of two sections joined with hinge and concealed pin mechanism, decorated overall with bosses, circa 3rd Century A.D., ¾ in. (2 cm.) diam.; and a group of Near Eastern stone seals and amulets, including five Syrian and Levantine dark stone seals, late 2nd/early 1st millennium B.C.; a Neo-Babylonian chalcedony domed seal, 7th Century B.C.; a Sassanian rock-crystal ring seal, 3rd-5th Century A.D., 2 in. (5 cm.) long max.; a pottery bull's head; and a Cypriot terracotta spindle whorl, red polished ware, early 2nd millennium B.C., 2 in. (5 cm.) diam. (15)
