JÜRGEN SETTGAST (1932-2004)(lots 283-310 and 350-377) Jürgen Settgast was born in Wismar, Germany, but in August 1951, he left what was then East Germany for West Germany as a political refugee. After gaining his PhD in Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg, Prof. Settgast spent many years in Egypt excavating in the Theban Necropolis and as assistant at the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo. In 1968 he was appointed Director of the Ägyptisches Museum in West Berlin. For his outstanding and visionary leadership of the museum from 1968-1988, the Federal Republic of Germany awarded him the Cross of Merit.
