For cosmetic and medical use, including scoop-probes, ear-probes, spatula-probes, hooks, spoons including a tinned bronze spoon with circular bowl, six tweezers, a double-ended olivary and a stylus head, some of the implements with turned ornamentation and olivary terminals, five more probably from the ancient Near East (a lot)

Provenance
Acquired by Professor Henry Hofman in the mid 1940s to mid 1950s and bequested to the M. Th. Houtsma Foundation; sold by the Foundation in 1989 and acquired by the present owner at that time.

Henry Hofman was Professor of Turkish and Altaic Studies at Utrecht University in the 1960s-1970s. He was interested in and published scientific texts in Chaghatay, and it was in this connection that he also collected Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic medical instruments. Most of his collection was assembled in the first decade after World War II.
