The limestone bust, from which this cast has been taken, was excavated by the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft from a sculptor's studio at Tell el Amarna in the early 20th Century and is now in the Ägyptisches Museum Berlin, inv. no. 20496. It has been identified as Tutankhamun by K. H. Priese in the Ägyptisches museum Berlin catalogue, Mainz 1991, no. 72 and as 'Smenkhare' by C. Aldred in exhibition catalogue Akhenaten and Nefertiti, Brooklyn, 1973, fig. 55. 'Smenkhare' is thought, by a number of scholars, to be none other than Nefertiti.
