SECOND HALF OF 6TH CENTURY B.C., PROBABLY NAUKRATIS
With aperture on centre back, of naturalistic form with incised cross-hatching indicating the spines, 2½ in. (6.3 cm.) long; a Hellenistic painted terracotta figure of a grotesque dwarf, crouching, with bowl held up to his left shoulder, second half of 6th Century B.C., probably Naukratis, 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.) high; a terracotta figure of a boy seated on a bench, naked save for a himation around his left arm, 5½ in. (14 cm.) high, both repaired; a bronze figure of Aphrodite, fragmentary, with left hand covering her breasts, the back hollowed out, mounted, 2nd-1st Century B.C.; a Syro-Hittite terracotta standing female idol, stylized, with hands to her breasts, 2nd millennium B.C., 5 1/8 in. (13 cm.) high; and a terracotta horse and rider, 3 in. (7.6 cm.) high, both repaired (6)

Lot Essay

Item one: Many such aryballoi were found in Rhodes, but it is generally thought that these vessels, showing the Egyptian long eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus), were made in Naukratis, the Greek settlement in the Nile delta.
