Lot Essay

Conceived in the 'French' taste as polularised by the Prince of Wales, later George IV, and promoted by architect Henry Holland this cabinet exemplifies the taste of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. One of the principal cabinet-makers producing such 'elegant Parisian Furniture' was the firm of John McLean (d.1825) and Sons, located at Pancras Street, London. While this piece does not epitomise all of his work the fluted columns, cut panelled doors and pierced ormolu gallery appear on several simple elegant forms of McLean's oeuvre (see S.Redburn, 'John McLean and Son', Furniture History, 1978, pl. 32-45).
