The form of the bodies of this pair of 'candle vases' is virtually identical to a pair of 'vase perfume burners' circa 1772, illustrated in N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, pls. 141 & 143. The loop handles and ram's mask mounts as well as the ribbon-tied laurel garlands are very similar in both design and the quality of the casting and chasing. The quality of Boulton's work is known to have varied, with the more expensive items being considerably more finely worked than those less costly.

A drawing for a vase from Boulton and Fothergill's Pattern Book I, p. 170, with white marble body but conforming decoration to the arms and swags relates to a pair of 'candle vases' at Sherborne Castle, Dorset (N. Goodison, op. cit., p. 312, pls. 296 & 297).
