Lot Essay

The form of these wall-lights with their camel-head terminals match a pair of candelabra, offered Christie's, New York, 16 October 1998, lot 221, one of which is pictured here. They reflect le goût turc and specifically derive from a model supplied by the French bronzier François Rémond for the marchand mercier Dominique Daguerre in 1786 which were sold in the sale of his effects by Christie's, 26 March 1790 and are now in the Royal collection at Windsor Castle. Other variations on this model include a pair supplied for the Comte d'Artois for his 'cabinet turque' at Versailles in 1783 (see C.Baulez, 'François Rémond et le gout turc dans la famille royale au temps de Louis XVI', L'Objet d'Art, December 1987).
