Lot Essay

The form of this fender, in particular the modelling of the recumbent lioness', is based upon Egyptian idols as promoted by the connoisseur Thomas Hope and published in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. XLVI. The lioness' feature as mantle ornaments on the chimney-piece in the Egyptian Room of his Duchess Street mansion, an illustration of which is published op. cit., pl. VIII.
