A fine and rare 19th-Century English lacquered-brass compound binocular microscope,
a plaque on the foot for FIELD & Co SUFFOLK ST BIRMINGHAM, the eyepieces with rack and pinion adjustment, the body-tubes with rack and pinion focusing, micrometer fine adjustment, prism drawer and double nosepiece, mounted on a curved limb over a circular mechanical stage with 0-180° scale along the front half of the circumference, a screw knob beneath for rotating the stage, together with substage condensor with rack and pinion adjustment and diaphragm and a plano-concave substage mirror, raised on two shaped uprights from a V-shaped foot, with table bull's-eye condensor and lieberkuhn stands, with five eyepieces, ¼, ½, 1 and 3in. objectives in marked canisters, substage and nosepiece polarisers, a second substage condensor and a drawer containing various items including a detachable knurled handle for the stage screw clamps, stage forceps, tweezers, probes, lens tissue, live box, substage aperture disc, a nose-mounted arm holding a small disc of slightly smoked glass and other items, in a fitted mahogany carrying case with brass handle and key -- 50.5cm.
