This great meteorite was first discovered by Spanish explorers in Chaco, Argentina in 1572. Thousands of pieces have been found near the point of impact, the largest weighing an immense 37 tons. This example is from a later find about a hundred miles from the original strew field, on a mountainside several feet underground. The older Campos have been lying in damp soil for centuries and as a result are largely rust now; the specimens of which the one here offered is an example have remained perfectly dry and free from rust, and are fully regmaglypted (exhibiting "thumbprints"), rivalling the Gibeon and Sikhote-Alin meteorites in character.
