(1924-2001) A physical scientist with wide ranging interests, inventive genius and a passion for solving problems, Edward 'Teddy' Hall was also responsible for devising non-destructive methods of analysis and dating. His achievements included ground-breaking work on the Turin Shroud and various bottles of famous 18th Century Chateau Lafite. He was also largely responsible for creating a hybrid of science and art which is now known as Archaeometry. He was also a collector of 'considerable determination' and during his lifetime amassed exceptional and important collections of antique clocks, scientific instruments and notably, Chinese monochrome porcelains. One of his other less well publicised passions, apart from his gathering of over one million cigarette cards during his time at Eton College, was wine. Typically for a man with such a singular approach to solving problems, he devised and constructed a suitably unique solution for the storage of his beloved bottles. In the garden of his home, he installed what can only be described as a 'bunker'- at ground level and insulated by thousands of tons of earth and then landscaped as to be almost completely invisible to the casual observer. Inside was temperature-controlled with excellent natural humidity and space for over 5000 bottles. From the sale of the following lots we can deduce his passion - Bordeaux of the best quality. All the first growths are represented plus Pétrus - mostly from excellent vintages. Bidders should indeed regard this as a very special opportunity to acquire wines that have been lovingly aged in perfect conditions, from the cellar of a knowledgeable and most fascinating individual.
