Lot Essay

The present sketch is one of the few works where Gibert has chosen to include figures. True plein air purists preferred landscapes without people or animals, yet it has been proposed that the addition of figures would have made these sketches more commercially appealing. The masterful suggestion of the hill rising in the distance is made possible through a subtle deeping of the sky tones.
