On a shaped circular base raised on six scroll legs with shell feet, the apron with scrolls and rocaille, the base surmounted by three heraldic demi-griffins each holding a shield, the dome cast and chased with foliage, against a matte scale pattern, the baluster stem and socket with spiral scrolls and panels of pendant foliage, the six-light branch with acanthus-clad arms, and conforming sockets with waxpans and nozzles, the shields engraved with a monogram, crest and presentation inscription, marked on base, apron, branch, sockets, nozzles and wax pans, the Victorian wax pans, mark of Mortimer & Hunt, one nozzle 1833

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: PRESENTED to George Frederick Holroyd Esq. as a testimony of SINCERE ESTEEM & REGARD by a few friends CONNECTED WITH The London Chatham & Dover RAILWAY June 1862.

Paul Storr produced several variations of this important model. A suite of six silver candelabra dating to 1823 incorporate heraldic demi-unicorn crests. Commissioned for the Sampaio family, they sold at Christie's, New York, 19 April 2002, lot 348. A pair of six-light candelabra dating to 1825 feature demi-dog crests, and sold at Sotheby's, New York, 16 April 1996, lot 252.
