Lot Essay

Recorded as 'Tozer tray', order number 296 in Ramsden's workbook. This bowl was initially conceived and produced for stock. Costs are indicated on the original entry for enamelling, which must have been subsequently removed. While it is not clear if the tray was unsuitable for Ramsden's customers or if it was somehow damaged, an entry on March 3 1922 records "adding top flange to make a rose bowl." Further entries detail the addition of the grill and the casting of a figural finial which is later replaced by the rose finial. After several years in development the bowl was finally sold for £133-7-0.
