Each circular section base decorated with flute and bead motifs, with a knopped stem and a flaring wax pan, engraved with a coat-of-arms, the sconces with gothic arch motifs and detachable nozzles, the base engraved with an inscription, marked under wax pan, on sconce and nozzle, the base engraved 'OMAR RAMSDEN ME FECIT'
6 in. (15.2 cm.) high
51 oz. (1,590 gr.)
The arms appear to be those of Sydney impaled by another, presumably the assumed arms of Rowe.

The inscription reads: 'IN PIAM MEMORIAM RICHARDI REYNOLDS ROWE A. S. MCMXXV' (2)

Lot Essay

Another pair of the same form is on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum from a North Lambeth church. That pair, which is hallmarked 1925, and the present pair are recorded in Ramsden's workbooks as number 883, 'Hill Candlestick'. Ramsden has also added an annotation in the entry for 'one pair made for Sydney Sussex Coll. Cambridge Feb 14th 1925' which must refer to this pair.
