Lot Essay

San Francisco provided a valuable backdrop for Hagemeyer's early Modernist work. He photographed skyscrapers, electrical wires, trolley cars and figures moving in a complex cityscape. In many of these metropolis images, he concentrated on geometric detail and the play of shadows, using both bird and worm-eye perspectives to achieve the desired effect.
