Born in Japan, Soichi Sunami moved to the United States first settling in Seattle were he studied painting and photography. In 1921 Sunami moved to New York and worked as a retoucher for Nickolas Muray. Soichi Sunami eventually opened up his own studio frequently photographing dancers including Martha Graham and from 1930 until his retirement worked as a photographer for the Museum of Modern Art.
