AN IZNIK POTTERY JUG
OTTOMAN TURKEY, CIRCA 1600
Of baluster form on short foot rising to flaring trumpet mouth and with simple loop handle, decorated in cobalt-blue, turquoise, bole-red and black, the body with all-over design of intertwined white and blue fleshy lobed leaves reserved on a turquoise ground, with a register of similar single leaves curling to the right on the neck, the base with a register of stylized marbling, the slightly raised waist with plait at the join and below with border of long red fringes, the mouth with a band of simple black spirals between rings, chips to mouth, some filled, hairline crack

Lot Essay

Jugs of this design seem to have been particularly popular in the west. Two examples are known with contemporaneous silver mounts, one in the Gulbenkian collection (Maria Queiroz Ribero: Iznik Pottery, Lisbon, 1996, no.103, p.275), the other, with magnificent gilt mounts hallmarked 1597-8, in the British Museum (John Carswell: Iznik Pottery, London, 1998, pl.82, p.101). A number of further examples are known, almost all either on a green or turquoise ground.
