Hagop Kevorkian At the end of the 19th century, two influential dealers emerged from the Armenian city of Kayseri who would prove pivotal to the development of Islamic art collecting in general, and Iznik ceramics in particular. Hagop Kevorkian and Dikran G. Kelekian both settled in New York where they opened galleries exhibiting "Persian" art. They found a city largely uneducated in the Islamic art market, where they were able to buy collections largely unchallenged at auction houses. Both played important roles in the creation of Islamic collections in American museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walters Art Gallery and the Freer Gallery of Art. Kevorkian was a student of archaeology who excavated at Sultanabad and Rayy in the early 20th century. Although he was primarily a dealer of art from the Near East, he formed his own personal collection as well as collecting for a small group of American elite, including J.P.Morgan and the Astors. A dedicated philanthropist, his bequests can be found throughout major American art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Kevorkian Foundation continues to fund the study of Islamic art history and conservation long after his death in 1962.
