Lokoya, Mountain Veeder, Cabernet Sauvignon--Vintage 1999
Napa Valley
I was perplexed by the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder. It displays a mid-ninety point nose of fabulously complex aromas of melted licorice, black currants, cedar, plums, and blackberries. In the mouth, copious quantities of powerful tannin resulted in a toughness/roughness and earthiness to the wine's personality. If it fleshes out and becomes more harmonious, it will be an exciting effort, but its astringency is worrisome. I suspect it will last 15-20 years. Will it ever achieve harmony and finesse? Will it ever be enjoyable enough to actually drink? Robert Parker. Wine Advocate #142 (Aug 2002)
